Severe Foot Pain

Maria presented to us 3 months ago with severe right foot pain that she has been suffering with for years. She was unable to work, exercise or participate in any activities requiring prolonged standing. Surgical intervention featured an isolated STJ (subtalar joint) fusion with a tibial autograft harvest to stimulate healing the fusion site. Today marks the first day in many years she is able to walk with zero pain or discomfort.

Calcaneal Apophysitis

This pediatric condition also known as “calcaneal apophysitis” is commonly seen in our office featuring moderate grade heel pain which is exacerbated by physical activity. This condition is simply inflammation of the open growth plate seen on the featured X-ray. Treatment is typically successful with a reduction in activity, offloading heel cup and NSAIDs. In more severe cases a fracture boot is used until symptoms subside. Sever’s disease does have tendency to recur, however will not return once the child becomes skeletally mature around 13-15 years of age.

Trauma Reconstruction

Successful trauma reconstruction on this recent patient featuring a relatively simple ankle fracture repair with more complex reconstruction of a nonunion/fracture with displacement at the great toe joint. This repair included a tricky hardware removal, tibial autograft harvest and revised hardware construct. The before and after are 3 months apart, and the patient has now returned back to all activities with no pain or discomfort.

Peroneal Tendon Repair

David is fully recovered just over one month out from peroneal tendon repair! Quick recovery is something we take pride in, which is made possible by offering in house physical therapy. Typically post-op patients will leave my treatment room and simply walk down to the end of the hall to begin their rehab process with Dr. Blankenship….One-stop shop!

Lisfranc Injuries

Lisfranc injuries present with varying levels of severity. Often times the injury may be so subtle an MRI is needed to diagnose. More traumatic injuries typically involve both fractures and or ligament rupture, which require the need for a combination of joint fusion and fracture repair after anatomic reduction has been achieved. This featured case is an example combining open reduction internal fixation with primary arthrodesis (fusion) procedures.

Flexible Flatfoot

The flexible flatfoot is a common condition seen in children causing collapse of the arch and subsequent pain with difficulty participating in certain activities. The majority of the time conservative treatment modalities with correctional orthotics are all that is needed to resolve acute symptoms. This 13-year-old patient, unfortunately, did not respond to conservative care and was taken to surgery to correct the underlying deformity with an achilles lengthening, subtalar arthroereisis, and opening wedge (cotton) osteotomy. After a couple months of recovery, she was back running around in shoes with no pain or discomfort.
